FREDERICKSBURG WINE COUNTRY
According to the Austin American Statesman the Texas Dept. of Agriculture’s research shows that wine tourism increased more than 40% from 2007 to 2009 to more than 1.3 million visitors. There are now more than 220 wineries in the state many of which seem to be in our own Gillespie County area.
Three new operations are under way on US 290 east, Messina Hof; Mendelbaum Cellars (a tasting room featuring wines form Inwood Estates in Dallas; 4.0 Cellars, a collaboration from McPherson Cellars in Lubbock, Lone Oak Winery in Burleson and Brennan Vineyards in Comanche. These 3 join the many already established Wineries located around the Hill Country with tasting rooms on Main Street as well.
In 2007 an Orbitz study found that the Hill Country was the No. 2 wine destination in the country, right behind Napa Valley in California. October 22nd is the annual Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest on Market Square .
