Local Economic News by Tony Stevenson, SWBC

The Eagle Ford Shale continues to make the news in Texas as the windfall of oil and gas leases in Texas are gaining momentum. A huge economic boom for our state and South Texas continues. Texas Railroad Commission Chairwoman Elizabeth Jones extolled the economic benefits of drilling in the Eagle Ford Shale Wednesday saying its production is adding significantly to state coffers. Certain problems still exist regarding employment issues as there seems to be a shortage of truck drivers. If you know of anyone looking for a job, now could be the best time in years to find gainful employment. The income from these jobs is not too shabby either.

Expect the Unexpected: The cost of home

Expect the Unexpected: The cost of home maintenance and repairs is usually one of the biggest surprises for new homeowners. Unfortunately, some buyers—especially first-time buyers—do not plan for such expenses because they’ve always had a landlord or property owner who deals with problems.

When you’re setting up your budget and trying to determine how much house to buy, make sure to earmark some cash for regular home maintenance. Most times, ignoring a problem will end up costing you more in the long term.

You should also plan for an unanticipated problem to pop up. When your water heater goes out or the plumbing system backs up, you don’t want to be strapped for cash—those things need to be fixed. Fast.

Buying a home is a sound investment—but don’t forget to take care of your purchase … and that means setting aside a little cash each month.

FREDERICKSBURG WINE COUNTRY

According to the Austin American Statesman the Texas Dept. of Agriculture’s research shows that wine tourism increased more than 40% from 2007 to 2009 to more than 1.3 million visitors.  There are now more than 220 wineries in the state many of which seem to be in our own Gillespie County area.

Three new operations are under way on US 290 east, Messina Hof; Mendelbaum Cellars (a tasting room featuring wines form Inwood Estates in Dallas; 4.0 Cellars, a collaboration from McPherson Cellars in Lubbock, Lone Oak Winery in Burleson and Brennan Vineyards in Comanche.  These 3 join the many already established Wineries located around the Hill Country with tasting rooms on Main Street as well.

In 2007 an Orbitz study found that the Hill Country was the No. 2 wine destination in the country, right behind Napa Valley in California.    October 22nd is the annual Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest on Market Square .  A celebration of Texas food and wine with cooking school, speciality booths, music and much more.  www.fbgfoodandwinefest.com gives more information and opportunity to purchase tickets.
